Jabra Glossary

This glossary contains explanations of common Jabra terminology including industry, technical, and marketing terms.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

Audio technology that reduces unwanted background noise. ANC detects and analyzes the incoming noise and then generates reverse sound waves to cancel it out. Read more about Jabra's Noise Cancellation here.

Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)

A Bluetooth profile that enables the wireless transfer of high quality audio signals, such as music between a headset and a supported Bluetooth device.

around-the-neck

A headset wearing style that uses a neckband.

audio jack

A connector that allows a cable to transfer audio between devices..

audio streaming

Wireless transmission of audio in real time for Jabra devices using a Smart case.

automatic volume control (AVC)

The automatic adjustment of the volume of an audio signal, depending on the level of ambient noise.

Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)

Bluetooth profile that provides a headset with capabilities to play, pause and stop music, and skip to next or previous track.

base

A charging stand for a Jabra headset. Some bases also enable a connection with desk phones, conferencing apps on a computer, and Bluetooth devices.

behind-the-ear

A headset wearing style that wraps behind the ear to keep the headset in place.

behind-the-head

A headset wearing style that wraps behind the back of the neck.

Bluetooth®

A standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices.

Bluetooth® adapter

A USB device that enables a wireless connection between a computer and a wireless Jabra device.

Bluetooth® bonding

The Bluetooth devices remember the security information exchanged during a successful pairing, allowing the devices to automatically reconnect without going through the pairing process again.

Bluetooth® Low Energy

Bluetooth technology that has the same characteristics as a classic Bluetooth connection, but with a lower power consumption. Also known as BLE or Bluetooth LE. Learn more about BLE here.

Bluetooth® Multipoint

Bluetooth technology that lets you connect your headset to two devices at once, allowing you to switch easily between devices. Audio is only transmitted to one device at a time.

Bluetooth® profile

Bluetooth profiles determine what functions can be performed between devices connected over Bluetooth. Learn more about Bluetooth® profiles here.

boom arm

The extended part of the headset that positions the microphone close to your mouth.

busylight

The light or lights on the headset that turn red when you are on a call or when you manually activate them. The busylight lets others know you are busy.

camera controller

A widget in Jabra Direct and Jabra Sound+ that enables remote control of the Jabra PanaCast 50 from a computer, phone or tablet.

compatibility guide

A reference guide that establishes which products are compatible with other products, services, and accessories.

conference mode

A function for a Jabra wireless DECT product, in which one to three additional compatible headsets can be temporarily connected to a primary DECT base or adapter. The connected participants can listen and talk to each other during a phone or conference call.

conferencing app

Software that enables audio or video calls over the internet using a computer or smartphone. Also known as softphone.

connectivity

The capability of connecting a headset or base to additional devices and systems.

controller

An accessory that adds call controls to a headset.

convertible

Mono headset that can adapt to different wearing styles, such as a headband, neckband and earhook. Convertible headsets can be worn on the left or right.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications)

A high quality, wireless radio technology used to transmit audio between a headset and a base or Link adapter.

dial tone switch

A switch on a headset base that is used to find the dial tone of a desk phone and adjust the audio clarity.

digital signal processing (DSP)

The digital processing of audio signals by a Jabra device to enhance the audio quality of the human voice and to reduce background noise.

duo headset

A headset that has two earcups, with a mono signal being transmitted to both earcups simultaneously.

EarGelsTM

A small, soft, removable in-ear headset accessory that covers the speaker. EarGels are designed to channel sound directly into the ear and come in small, medium, large or extra large sizes.

EarHook

A headset accessory that wraps over and behind the ear to secure the headset.

EarWingTM

A small, soft, removable accessory that covers an earbud. EarWings are designed to offer a secure fit for the ear.

electronic hook switch (EHS)

A cable solution that connects a wireless headset base to a desk phone, enabling call control functionality directly on the headset.

Enhanced Noise Suppression

An audio setting provided on the PanaCast products that cancels static and transient noises in the meeting room to optimize the audio experience of remote participants.

Extreme Noise Suppression

An audio setting provided on the PanaCast VBS products that suppresses all background noises.

Face2Face Mode

Mute all incoming audio when lifting the microphone boom arm of your headset.

Find my Jabra

A mobile app feature that uses geo tagging to identify your Jabra device's last known location.

full duplex audio

Two-way transmission of audio when talking on a speakerphone, which allows everyone to speak and be heard simultaneously.

Google Fast Pair

A feature in Android 6.0 or later versions to streamline the pairing process between an Android device and a Bluetooth device that supports Google Fast Pair.

Acoustic safety guideline that provides hearing protection according to Australian regulations. Learn more about hearing protection here.

HD Voice

Refers to high-definition voice quality for audio. Call technology that carries voice data in a wider band of frequencies. Also known as wideband.

head detection

Sensors in the headset that detect when the headset is being worn. Head detection enables automatic call & music controls, such as pausing and resuming music.

head tracking

A Dolby Atmos feature that recalibrates your audio by following your head movements, ensuring you are always in the center of the soundscape.

HearThrough

HearThrough allows you to stay aware of your surroundings by transmitting the ambient sounds picked up by the microphones to the headset speakers.

huddle room

A small meeting room, typically seating up to 8 people and equipped with teleconferencing and collaboration technologies.

in-ear detection

Sensors in the earbuds that detect when they are being worn. In-ear detection enables automatic call & music controls, such as pausing and resuming music.

Intelligent Acoustic Shock Protection

Hearing protection technology that analyzes and then reduces or removes potential harmful sounds without affecting the call. Learn more about hearing protection here.

Intelligent Meeting Space

A customized boundary that can be applied to a meeting space. This will ensure that only people within this boundary will be considered as meeting room participants. This feature is useful for meeting rooms that have glass walls and meetings that take place in open areas.

Intelligent Zoom

Dynamically frames all visible people within 3.5 meters (11 feet) of the camera.

IntellitoneTM

Hearing protection technology that automatically adjusts the headset volume to ensure a safe level of noise exposure to align with the Noise at Work standard. Learn more about hearing protection here.

IP rating

A protection standard that determines how well a device can withstand the intrusion of elements such as dust and water. Learn more about IP rating here.

LE Audio

A Bluetooth standard that enhances audio experiences, particularly for music streaming and gaming. It allows for seamless audio sharing among multiple devices and provides improved sound quality and lower latency. LE Audio operates on the Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Learn more about LE Audio here.

leatherette

Refers to a synthetic material used for the ear cushions on a headset that feels like leather.

LED

The lights on a device that indicate the status of specific functions. Also known as LED indicator or status LED.

Listen Modes

The predefined sound profiles, within the Jabra Enhance app, which deliver the most appropriate sound to your hearing-enhancement earbuds to suit your surroundings.

Microphone quality indicator

A feature on the speakerphone that notifies in-room participants if they are being heard. The speakerphone LED ring lights up with a range of different colors to indicate how clearly the speakerphone is picking up voices around it.

Moment

A set of predefined audio settings in the Jabra Sound+ app. Each Moment is designed for a specific situation, such as commuting, in private, or in public. Moments can be customized to your preference.

mono headset

A headset that has one earpiece.

mono mode

A mode that allows using only one earbud independently of the other.

Multi-function button

Non-customizable button on a headset that has multiple basic functions.

Multipoint

Bluetooth technology that lets you connect your headset to two devices at once, allowing you to switch easily between devices. Audio is only transmitted to one device at a time.

MultiSensor VoiceTM

A Jabra technology that automatically cancels out wind noise when you are on a call. It combines powerful microphones, an advanced Voice Pick Up (VPU) sensor in each earbud, bone conduction sensors, and unique algorithms.

Multi-stream Dynamic Composition (PanaCast 50 VBS)

A camera mode that displays up to 4 speakers and a panoramic view of the meeting room in a single tiled view in your conferencing app. The tiled view dynamically updates to display the participants who are actively speaking.

Multi-stream Dynamic Composition (PanaCast 50)

A camera mode that displays two participants and a panoramic view in individual tiled views in Microsoft Teams Room. This camera mode supports Microsoft's IntelliFrame and Microsoft's Person Recognition.

Multiuse

A Jabra feature that enables connectivity between a headset/headphones/earbuds and multiple telephony devices.

MyControls

A Jabra Sound+ feature which allows you to reconfigure the standard button functions on your Jabra device.

MyFit

A Jabra Sound+ feature that checks the fit of each earbud to help you determine the best EarGel size and position of the earbud.

MySound

A Jabra Sound+ feature which performs an audio test to create a personalized audio profile to optimize your music experience.

narrowband

Call technology that carries voice data in a narrower band of frequencies, as opposed to wideband audio.

Natural HearThrough

An enhanced version of standard HearThrough. Natural HearThrough allows you to stay aware of your surroundings by submitting background sounds to your headset or earbuds in a natural, lifelike tone. You can use Natural HearThrough without having to pause your audio, and it can be toggled on and off.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

Short-range wireless technology to quickly pair a Jabra device headset with your phone. Both devices need to be placed as closely as possible to ensure a successful pairing.

Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI)

Short-range wireless technology that connects two earbuds with each other. When the earbuds are connected, the maximum range between them is 20cm/8in.

Noise at Work

Region-specific standards that require businesses ensure workers are not exposed to noise levels that exceed the standard.

Noise Suppression

An audio setting provided on the PanaCast VBS products that suppresses constant noise in a meeting room, such as a fan or air conditioning.

noise-cancelling microphone

A microphone that filters out unwanted background noise to prioritize your voice when on a call.

on-ear detection

A feature that detects when the headset is being worn using sensors in the headset. On-ear detection enables automatic actions, such as muting/unmuting the microphone, or answering calls.

on-head detection

A feature that detects when the headset is being worn using a motion sensor in the headset. On-head detection enables automatic actions, such as muting/unmuting the microphone, or answering calls.

Over The Air (OTA)

Technology that allows firmware updating of Jabra devices wirelessly. Also known as OTA.

pairing

The process of establishing a wireless connection between Bluetooth devices.

pairing mode

Pairing mode is a Bluetooth device state that allows it to be discovered and connected to by other Bluetooth devices.

Panoramic-4K

A screen resolution that is equivalent to two 1080p displays side by side, joined together using real-time image stitching.

Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ)

Pan-Tilt-Zoom are three separate adjustments that can be applied to a video image. Pan adjusts the horizontal view of the image. Tilt adjusts the vertical view. Zoom adjusts the distance of the view.

Passive Noise Cancellation (PNC)

Physically reducing background noise by wearing a headset or earbuds. PNC does not use any type of electronic or audio technology.

PeakStopTM

A hearing protection technology that eliminates potentially harmful sound spikes. Learn more about hearing protection here.

plug-and-play

Devices that will work without any manual configuration or additional software.

Power Nap

A battery-saving feature that places the Jabra device in standby mode when it is not being used.

Push-To-Talk (PTT)

A way of communicating using a headset button to switch between listening and speaking. By default, the microphone is muted, but pressing the button allows the user to speak.

QD cable

A quick disconnect cable that connects a corded headset to a desk phone or computer.

Remote Call Control (RCC)

The ability to remotely control a device, such as a phone, using a headset.

remote handset lifter (RHL)

An accessory that physically lifts the desk phone handset to answer or end calls when triggered by a wireless headset.

Room System

A system, made up of a camera and tablet, designed to allow people to join virtual meetings in a meeting room without needing to bring their own device.

Hearing protection that includes PeakStopTM and IntelliToneTM technologies. It complies with the EU and US safety requirements for Noise at Work. Learn more about hearing protection here.

ShakeGripTM

An earbud coating made with a special compound of Liquid Silicone Rubber that holds the earbuds securely in the ear. Jabra ShakeGrip keeps your buds firmly in place when you are active.

Sidetone

Audio feedback from one's own voice, that a headset user hears when speaking into the microphone. Voice is picked up by the microphone and transmitted to the speaker. You can typically adjust the sidetone level on a Jabra device.

Single-stream Dynamic Composition

A camera mode that displays up to 4 participants in a meeting room in a single tiled view in your conferencing app. The tiled view dynamically updates to display the participants who are actively speaking.

sleep mode

A battery-saving feature that places the Jabra device in standby mode when it is not being used.

Smart Gallery

A camera mode for Zoom rooms that displays up to 5 individual video streams of in-room participants and displays them in their own video tile, as well as a panoramic view of the meeting room.

softphone

Software that enables audio or video calls over the internet using a computer or smartphone. Also known as conferencing app.

spatial sound

Audio technology that automatically optimizes your music, videos, or calls for an immersive 360° surround sound experience.

speakerphone

A Jabra device with a loudspeaker and a microphone for meetings and calls.

status LED

The lights on a device that indicate the status of specific functions. Also known as LED indicator or LED.

stereo headset

Headset with left and right audio channels that are transmitted through the speakers.

talk time

The battery capacity of a wireless device indicated by the number of hours the device can be used for calls.

true wireless

Bluetooth earbuds that do not have a cord connecting them to each other or to an audio device.

Unified Communications (UC)

Jabra Unified Communications (UC) devices are headsets, speakerphones or video bars that are designed to work with softphones or conferencing apps.

video conferencing application

An application used to communicate and collaborate via video. For example, Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Virtual Director

A feature on a Jabra video device which utilizes advanced tracking technology to focus the camera view on whomever is currently speaking.

voice assistant

Voice activated software on a smartphone or other device. For example, Google Assistant™, Siri® or Amazon Alexa.

VoiceControlTM

A feature for Blueparrott devices that allows you to control the headset with voice commands. For example, 'Answer' to answer a call, or 'What can I say' to hear the list of available voice commands.

wideband audio

Wideband audio transmits voice data in a wide band of frequencies, as opposed to narrowband audio. Wideband offers High Definition audio voice quality. Also known as HD Voice.

wind noise reduction

Microphone technology that reduces wind noise to improve your call and audio experience.

Windows Swift Pair

A feature in Windows 10 or later versions that streamline the connection between the computer and compatible Bluetooth devices.

Xtreme Noise SuppressionTM

Microphone technology that reduces all ambient noise to ensure you are always heard.
